Εμείς, οι υπογράφοντες, αντιτιθέμεθα στη συντονισμένη εκστρατεία άρνησης στους ακαδημαϊκούς του δικαιώματος της ελευθερίας του λόγου εξ αιτίας της υπεράσπισης των παλαιστινιακών δικαιωμάτων και της κριτικής των πολιτικών και πρακτικών του κράτους του Ισραήλ.
Το Πανεπιστήμιο Temple της Φιλαδέλφειας των ΗΠΑ και το Πανεπιστήμιο του Σίδνεϊ της Αυστραλίας έχουν δεχθεί μεγάλες πιέσεις να απολύσουν, αντίστοιχα, τους Marc Lamont Hill και Tim Anderson, και τους δύο ανώτερους ακαδημαϊκούς στους θεσμούς τους, για τους λόγους αυτούς. Ο Steven Salaita και ο Norman Finkelstein έχουν ήδη καταστρέψει τη σταδιοδρομία τους με τέτοιες επιθέσεις. Ο Hatem Bazian, ο Ahlam Muhtaseb, ο William Robinson, ο Rabab Abdulhadi και άλλοι έχουν επίσης απειληθεί.
Η φαινομενική αιτιολόγηση για μια τέτοια ενέργεια είναι κοινώς γνωστή ως «Παλαιστινιακή εξαίρεση» στην αρχή της ελευθερίας του λόγου. Μπορεί κανείς να επικρίνει ελεύθερα και να αγνοήσει τις κυβερνήσεις – συμπεριλαμβανομένων των δικών του – θρησκείες, πολιτικές πεποιθήσεις, προσωπική εμφάνιση και σχεδόν όλα τα άλλα εκτός από τις ενέργειες και τις πολιτικές του κράτους του Ισραήλ. Όσοι τολμούν να το κάνουν, θα αποτελέσουν το επίκεντρο καλοφτιαγμένων και επαγγελματικών εκστρατειών για τη σιωπή ή / και την καταστροφή αυτών και της σταδιοδρομίας τους.
Αναγνωρίζουμε ότι μεγάλο μέρος της ελευθερίας του λόγου που ισχύει σε ακαδημαϊκά και άλλα περιβάλλοντα θα προσβάλλει ορισμένα άτομα και ομάδες. Ωστόσο, όπως έχει ειπωθεί πολλές φορές νωρίτερα, η απάντηση στην ελευθερία του λόγου που κάποιοι μπορεί να βρουν απαράδεκτη είναι περισσότερη ελευθερία λόγου, όχι λιγότερο. Ως εκ τούτου, καλούμε όλα τα ακαδημαϊκά ιδρύματα, τους διδάσκοντες και τους σπουδαστές τους, καθώς και το ευρύ κοινό, να αντισταθούν σε τέτοιες τακτικές εκφοβισμού και να υπερασπιστούν τις αρχές του ελεύθερου λόγου στις οποίες βασίζονται οι ίδιες και όλες οι ελεύθερες κοινωνίες και τα ιδρύματά τους.
